Heartburn in a pregnant woman

In a pregnant woman, the causes of heartburn may be different compared to the heartburn in another person.A woman who had no heartburn problem before pregnancy, may experience during pregnancy.

The pregnancy heartburn does not cause any disturbance to the baby's growth and health but it is annoying the mother during the early days of pregnancy.

This pregnancy heartburn is caused by the physical and hormonal changes in a woman's body.

In a pregnant woman, the progesterone hormone causes the valve between esophagus(food pipe) and stomach to relax, resulting in the acid reflux and heartburn.

The stomach acids may flow back into the food pipe which taste bitter or sour and cause a burning sensation. That is the food you enjoyed a couple of hours earlier.

The stomach size increases due to the growing uterus pressing into the acid upwards.
