Organs Digestive System - The Alimentary Canal

The organs digestive system (GI) are the organs of gastrointestinal tract. The digestion process takes place as the food passes through them.

The human digestive tract is different from the digestive system of other animals. Human digestive tract, also known as alimentary canal, is about 20feet (6.5 meters) long. It consists of upper and lower GI tracts. The parts of the digestive system are listed below.

The upper GI tract includes

  • Mouth
  • Pharynx
  • Esophagus
  • Stomach
  • The lower GI tract consists of

  • Intestine or bowel - small intestine
  • Large intestine – consists of colon and rectum
  • Anus
  • There are accessory digestive organs that help the digestion of food. These are :

  • Teeth
  • Tongue
  • Salivary glands,
  • Liver - The liver secrets bile into the small intestine.
  • Gallbladder - Gallbladder is the reservoir for the bile.
  • Pancreas - Pancreas secrets fluid containing bicarbonate and several enzymes.
  • Digestive disorders can occur if any organ is having problem.

    Heartburn occurs in the upper GI tract. Constipation occurs in the lower GI tract. Many diseases of the digestive system can be avoided by proper monitoring of the food intake, ie , the type of food, the time of the meal etc.
