Cooking with ginger is easy as there is not much preparation involved. Ginger can be used in both sweet and savory dishes.

Fresh ginger

You may want to make ginger root tea for digestion or may be you have a cold or are expecting to have a cold.

Ginger works for many ailments and hot ginger tea is one of the ways you can consume ginger.

The ingredients needed to make ginger tea are few and the method is easy. You need only water and fresh ginger root or dry ginger powder to make ginger tea.

Fresh ginger root is best for making ginger but in the absence of that, you may use dry ginger powder.

How to make Fresh Ginger root tea?

Ingredients for making 2 cups of ginger tea

  • water - 2 1/4 cups
  • fresh ginger root - 1 cm or more according to taste.
  • Lime juice(optional) - 1 tsp
  • Sweetener (optional) - honey, sugar according to taste

Method to make ginger root tea

  1. Wash the ginger root well to remove any dirt. There is no need to remove ginger skin but you may remove it if you wish.
  2. Cut ginger root in thin slices or small pieces or thin strips. I prefer to crush the ginger piece using mortar and pestle. I feel that gives faster results. You may also grate ginger with a small hole grater.
  3. Put this chopped/sliced/crushed or grated ginger in the water and bring to boil.
  4. Simmer covered for about 5 to 10 minutes. The simmering time depends on how strong you want the ginger flavor to be. Simmer longer or add more ginger to get a stronger flavor.
  5. Be around when the water starts boiling with ginger. The aroma is wonderful so do not miss it by going out of the kitchen.
  6. After the water has boiled with ginger, it will have a pale yellow-brown color. Just sniff it. Lovely!
  7. Now, if you like to chew ginger along with drinking tea, no need to strain it. If you don't want to chew ginger, strain it.
  8. Add honey if you like it sweetish. Sugar may be added instead of honey. But avoid adding sugar if this ginger tea is for helping digestion.
  9. Drink hot and experience the feeling of freshness and rejuvenation. 

How to make ginger tea using dry ginger powder?

 Ingredients for making 2 cups of tea

  • Water 2 1/4 cup
  • Dry ginger powder 1/2 tsp
  • Lime juice - 1 tsp
  • Sweetener (optional) - honey, sugar according to taste  

Method to make ginger tea with dry ginger powder

  1. Heat water till it starts boiling.
  2. Add dry ginger powder and simmer for 3-4 minutes. The ginger tea will be ready.
  3. No need to strain it.
  4. Add sugar or honey according to taste and drink hot. 

Tips : Lemon juice is optional. You may add a little milk instead of lemon juice if you wish.
