Constipation cures for children

Constipation cures for children are similar to the cure for adults having constipation. But children may have some different issues to deal with.

The causes for children having constipation may be a little differnt so accordingly the remedies for constipation will differ.

As all the causes may not be applicable to every child having constipation problem, child specific cures for constipation should be used depending on the causes observed.

Here are a few suggestions about what you can do

If Constipation is the result of wrong toilet habits

If a child

  • is skipping or avoiding visiting toilet for any reason - talk to the child and find out the reason. Explain to the child the need to go to toilet. Explaining is better than ordering them to go to toilet. Do this explaining when the child is in a receptive mood.
  • postpones or avoids going to toilet even when he/she feels the urge because they do not want to interrupt their play, remind them to go. Ask them if they have gone every day till they get into the habit of going regularly.
  • is afraid to go to the toilet alone, spend some time with him/her in the toilet while he does his job. Or be in the next room to the toilet where the child can hear you moving about or humming and singing.
Please do not scold or ridicule the child for being afraid. They do get over these fears as they grow up. Help them to do that faster by being more understanding.
  • is having painful bowel movements, he is likely to avoid going. Consulting the doctor is better in such a situation.
  • If a child is Having digestive disorders such as under active thyroid, allergy to dairy products, cows milk etc, consult the doctor and avoid those foods.
  • on medicines that cause constipation as a side effect, the doctor can help.
  • Cure for chronic constipation

By explaining the need to go to toilet when they feel the urge you can help the children. They may need to be reminded to go to toilet.

My daughter needed that reminder even though she was not constipated. She found it irritating to interrupt what ever she was doing. 'why do we have to go there everyday?' she would ask. I told her 'We eat 3 or more meals a day. Shouldn't we eliminate the waste at least once?' That seemed to convince her.

I still had to be patient and remind her to go. She started going once in two days and then later on, once a day.

Restoring the normal bowel habit can take some time. Keeping track of food and other habits can help. You can see results soon by offering healthier, high fiber foods. Do not bring any junk foods in the house.

Most of the time, explaining to the child peacefully about the health issues and good health practices may work better. Make sure you also follow your advice regarding the foods you eat and the way you eat. As children will follow your example.
