Causes of chronic constipation

Chronic constipation in children - adults / elders

Basic causes of chronic constipation in children and adults are similar. When the constipation continues for more than 3 months, it is considered to be chronic. The general constipation causes, symptoms continue to be present for a longer time.

In elders, there may be some added causes due to age. All elders are not likely to suffer from constipation. Their lifestyle, food habits since childhood as well as in adulthood also matter.

Those having healthy food habits since childhood are likely to continue with the healthy lifestyle and they are not likely to suffer from constipation.

Even those who change their not so healthy eating habits as they age, may not be troubled with constipation. And it is never too late to start healthy food habits and healthy lifestyle.

So there is hope for those who suffer from chronic constipation. The results of changes in food habits and healthy lifestyle may take longer to show.

What are the causes of chronic constipation?

Some medicines that the elders are taking can cause constipation.

Dehydration - some elders avoid drinking water or other fluids as that can make them visit the toilet frequently. They may be reluctant to leave their place because of knee joint pain. 

Some elders refuse to change their food habits. They want to continue the similar kind of unhealthy food (low fiber, high fat etc) they have been eating when younger.

The dentures may not be fitting properly and they can not chew the food properly.

They may have some problems of the digestive system, rectum, colon etc.

Having a stroke can cause cronic constipation.

They may get obsessed with not being able to have a daily bowel movement and use (misuse) laxatives too often.

A sedentary lifestyle

Low fiber diet

All the above things can add up to constipation problem.

Constipated children may be

eating more processed food 

consuming snacks containing more fat and less fiber

skipping visiting toilet out of laziness

not chewing food properly because they are in a hurry to go to play or somewhere else

forgetting to drink water and other healthy fluids because they do not want to interrupt what they are doing.
