Baking soda for heartburn - Home remedy

Baking soda for heartburn is an old home remedy for heartburn used worldwide. Baking soda, a natural antacid is one of the natural remedies for acidity, acid reflux and heartburn.

Baking soda is also known as sodium bi carbonate, is a quick, easy and non-expensive way to get rid of excess stomach acid and to get relief from acid reflux and heartburn.

How baking soda works on acid reflux and heartburn?

baking soda is alkaline. Baking soda reacts with the hydrochloric acid in the stomach by forming common salt, carbon dioxide gas and water. It neutralizes the stomach acids.

Baking soda is very useful in occasional heartburn that is caused by enjoying rich foods or alcohol in excess.

Why is baking soda a popular heartburn relief method?

  • Baking soda is generally available in the kitchen. It is available in most grocery stores.
  • It acts fast almost within minutes.
  • Dosage of baking soda when taking for heartburn.

1/2 tsp of baking soda dissolved in warm water works most of the time. If the symptoms persist after an hour, take another ½ tsp. It is better to take baking soda in smaller doses two or three times as required than taking a large dose once. That way you will not take an overdose.

Taking baking soda in excess can cause a problem because that will alkalize all the acid in the stomach. We only need to alkalize the excess acid that is causing the acid reflux and the heartburn pain. We do need some acid for digestion. If too much acid is neutralized, body will produce more acid and you may experience more acid reflux and heartburn.

    Caution while taking baking soda

  • Consult your doctor if you should take it and about the quantity that should be taken.
  • Baking soda is like any other antacid. It is useful as long as it is taken in moderation.
  • Do not take too much baking soda
  • Do not take it too frequently.
  • Persons having high blood pressure should take baking soda with caution. It has high sodium content and can cause rise in blood pressure.
  • Avoid taking baking soda if you are on prescription drugs.
  • Side effects of baking soda.

Baking soda not only has effect on the stomach acids but also on the whole body. If you take baking soda regularly, it can cause some other health problems. It can cause kidney stones or edema i.e. excessive fluid retention.

In any case, preventing acid reflux and heartburn is possible by avoiding the foods and situations that cause excess acidity in the stomach. The change towards healthy foods and healthy eating habits is a better and long lasting solution for a digestive problem most of the time.
